'Moana' Tops Thanksgiving Box Office, Disney Answers With "You're Welcome"

Disney appears to have another animated hit on its hands with the release of “Moana,” which pulled in $25.6 million on Wednesday and Thursday of its Thanksgiving weekend debut.

By comparison, “Frozen,” Disney’s 2013 holiday season hit, earned about $27 million in the Wednesday and Thursday of its Thanksgiving debut and went on to gross $93.6 million over the five-day holiday weekend. That’s the second-highest Thanksgiving weekend opening, behind “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” with $109.9 million. “Frozen” went on to earn nearly $1.3 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing animated film of all time and the ninth-highest grossing film of all time.

“Moana” is projected to earn $85 million over the five-day weekend. Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, the musical fantasy adventure stars Auli’i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Rachel House, Temuera Morrison, Jemaine Clement, Nicole Scherzinger and Alan Tudyk. It features music from “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, along with Opetaia Foa’I and Mark Mancina.
